Sulpa Adjust Maadi

A year back when I came to USA, and got to know that the place where I would be staying, is surrounded by South Indians, I had contemplated coming to this web space and penning down my thoughts on what I feel about this community. Well, that was then. I come here finally today to write down what I feel for South Indians now.

As a hard core North Indian, I came here with a view that South Indians are a rigid community who rarely intermingle with Northies, due to cultural and linguistic differences. In North, Southies are called “Chapandees” (no offence meant). However, today after spending a year with South Indian peers, my opinions have changed, only for good. My curious question is – Who, made these boundaries- As in this North Indian, South Indian, Bong ( Bengali), Punju ( Punjabi ), Mullah( Muslim) kind of titles? Who divided us in these segregations really?

I never actually wished to speak about this but just like they showed in a flick called "Exodus" there is a line that says "People make-believe that they are all the same and therefore there is no issue", but as a matter of fact "People are all dissimilar and this makes them uneasy accepting it, but you have to discover to value the diversities and get on with it".

On the lighter side, here are some popular diversity between North Indians and South Indians

South Indian: Believes it’s chic to converse in Hindi and make an impression on a North Indian

North Indian: Believe it’s chic to converse in English and make an impression on a South Indian

South Indian: Forever make use of words like Raa/Sir /Daa/Garu/Super.
North Indian: Forever converse in rhymed words - Cooler/Shooler, Party/Varty, burger/shurger, tea/vee, marriage/varriage, Teri/Meri, . So you got it/vot it right?

South Indian: Bonkers about Chiranjeeva/Rajnikantha and Dhabang koothu songs with lofty sounding whistling
North Indian: Bonkers about Sharukh/Kareena/Madhuri and drool over Balle Balle Punjabi Songs

South Indian: characteristically rules abiding, but Risk reluctant
North Indian: characteristically non rules abiding, however risk taking

South Indian: prudent and vigilant with money and always try to acquire value for money.

North Indian: Spendthrift by nature and spend money more copiously on living a flashy life

Last but not the least -

North Indian: Mock at the South Indians
South Indian: Mock at the North Indians

So now you see, although they are diverse. However they have the "similar" diversities.

Similarly ‘Gujhiya’ ( A north Indian sweet made on Holi) becomes ‘karjikai’ in kannada and ‘karjikaylu’ in telugu. At the end of the day they all taste sweet! Apparently, one of my best friends here in US, is a Kannad lady who is also an Ayurveda Doctor. We come from absolutely different places, speak different languages, follow diverse cultures and customs, yet a bond of friendship binds us closely.

I feel, there is never sufficient time for isolating people. We can squander all our lives discovering excuses to divide. As an alternative let’s admit that there are diversities all around us and instead use up time to welcome them and search for universal grounds. All this clamor of North Indians and South Indians will fizzle out only when we consider that it’s our Indian values that unites us and not the provincial predisposition and divisions and that’s when we will begin ideating globally in the actual sense.

To set apart two individuals, there can be countless disparities used to split them, but the actual harsh part is to discover camaraderie and welcome the differences.
