Palmtops. Blackberries. iPhones. Mobile Phones. The internet…etc etc..
Ever wondered, what would our lives be devoid of them? They've become as vital as our own right or left hand.
I know someone whose whole life revolves around blackberry. I can’t envisage his leaving home without it! The world would come to a halt. At least for him it would! I'm no different too, though. I know I've been petrified when I lost my phone once. It seemed like the blood runnin' through my veins. I couldn't do anything without it.
I have been wondering lately, since when did we ba so reliant on these gizmos and gadgets? Since when did communication transform into immediate indulgence?
I feel like it moved in gradually. Not an instant revolution. But one that started with a mobile phone which slowly turned to one that took photos and then to one that played music, and then finally to one that connects to the internet.
Gawd! The options are irresistible but now it is considered indispensable in our busy lives. Comman, Admit it; aren't you distraught when you can't reach someone right away?
And now it's been transferred down to the younger generation. All my younger siblings had a mobile phone at an age which when compared to my age at my time, I hardly knew what a cell phone would be like or its usage.
Times have changed drastically. Do we have to the time or the patience to get out of this comfort zone at all? Would the world come to a halt if these gizmos and gadgets and Internet would stop functioning one day? Would we not connect to our loved ones then? How do we fight this battle against technology (if we even want to)?
I have 3 ideas to overcome this:
- How about ringing a doorbell of a friend and saying hello in person.
- Then writing a note to your loved ones that is on actual stationery. ( the alienated letter pad!)
- Finally how about ditching your blackberry and enjoying a baseball match!.
I know these suggestions are far from reality and not something anyone of us would do in today’s fast moving world. But connecting personally has its own charm. I miss writing long lengthy letters to my father when I was in my college life, staying in a hostel. We could barely afford STD calls at those times, so writing a letter was the best way to connect with the man I loved the most at that time (still do!). I remember I use to pour my heart out in those letters, explaining all about my trials, tribulations and fears. In return what I always got were those comforting words which would heal everything for me. Of course, today we have Skype, Voipraider and Yahoo to connect! Nonetheless, I would still cherish those days when connecting personally would mean the world to me.
I know we might never return to those days when we wrote letters or posted greeting cards to our friends and family. However, while we'll never let go of these modern day gadgets, but at least we can slow down and forget them for a day. A task that sounds rather impossible!

Ahh the days when we bought cards for our friends and wrote nice messages in them for birthdays or friendship days etc
Thanks for taking the time to go through the post CriticalRebel.
There is sure nostalgia attached to personal connection in today's fast paced world. Sometimes, I wish I write letters and post hand drawn cards! If wishes were horses!
