The Average Indian Women vs. the Superwomen!

This one is for all those feminists who grumble and complain about ladies being depicted as mere sex objects - kindly focus on to the anguish of the women who are expected to conduct themselves like the ‘saas and bahus’ of the daily TV serials.

Picture this – What all an average woman in India has to contend with-

The female lead in the daily soaps is stunning, sexy, fashionable, stylish and full of beans even in profound slumber. Scores of hard work and energy is invested in that striking appearance. Just imagine of yourself going to bed in a weighty designer saree with tons of diamond and gold (fake btw) ornaments. She is an outstanding cook and hardly takes any time to prepare a scrumptious and nourishing food for her tons of children, spouse, family in-laws and even extended family and also neighbors sometimes. She is a perfect time management guru. She dresses up the children for school, walks them till the bus stop, comes back home, prepares breakfast and packs lunch for her husband. Sees him off to work with a loving peck on his cheeks- Mind you, all of these loving activities this without a symptom of exhaustion or stress. She goes to bed after making everyone else comfy and awakens anybody else has opened their eyes. Her house can contend for an award at the Star Pariwar Awards, if there was a category for tidy, modern and beautiful homes. Everything in her house is in its perfect position both beautifully and sensibly. When all's said and done when her children return from school and husband reaches home after a tedious and at times an exasperating day at work, she is all set to soak up all their anxieties with a beam. If the husband is unable to run the company or business for a while owing to a few bizarre reasons, she takes over (She is versatile and doesn’t need degrees to back her up r’ber?). In her second or third meeting, she finalizes deals worth of crores of rupees. All you Ratan Tatas and Ambanis and Narayanmurthys are a shame in front of her. The Shanti Bais and the Ramu Kakas are well skilled and well conducted (wonder why she does the household chores herself with so much help on hand) and she doesn’t require shouting at her husband or children to vent out her aggravation. Her kids are both meticulously well nurtured and very well-conducted or baddies who have to be made an element of the social convention by sheer endurance. At no juncture does she lose her cool; her smile is her biggest plus point. She is an ideal hostess to her husband and children’s friend circle. The most competent and tolerant nurse if God forbid someone in the family falls ill. Her appeals are most stirring and touching. God has no option but to respond to her prayers and carry out miracles when the doctor has given up hope on the ailing patient.

Compare and contrast this super woman with yourself, your mother friend, sister or anybody from your environs, town or city. Can you match up to these standards? You will discover the real woman inept, jumbled and sluggish. Wonder what good do these role models do to the Indian society, but I do know the harm- They raise expectations. Young girls want to grow up to be a perfect Parwatis while all the mom- in –laws- to be ,anticipate arrival of Tulsis as their bahus. All in vain though.

This is what we call slandering the average image of an average Indian woman!

Love Aaj Kal

Romeo and Juliet, Shirin-Farhad ,Heer-Ranjha, and all those other mushy love struck tales of love – I think most of us feel that they are only found in movies or fairy tales, right? Ever experienced the “true love” yourself? (And by saying “True love” I do not imply neighborhood’s Pinky who ran away with her motorbike- boy-friend). What I mean is rethinking over the venerable question that has always intrigued most of us at some stage of life: What is love actually? Does it really subsist? More significantly, what happens when we fall in it, if we do that is? It’s about love and the “aam” junta, the mango populace? Don’t fret – I am neither sleepy not stressed out, nor am I sinking in adumbrative anguish - I am just referring to a dialogue from “Love Aaj Kal”.

Exhaustions, commitment fear, long distance relationships – problems, with which the minus 30-age group can effortlessly relate to, are finely reflected upon the movie. Love Aaj Kal, with its twin-track love-tales falls sturdily into the romantic genus. Nevertheless it’s not your lathered, vivacious romance, like our favorite “Jab we met” , but more of a story of “complex” love – that is to say, discovering “Mr. Right/Ms. Right”, and on unearthing him/her, the more arduous mission of understanding and determining if this is it. It is about Jai (Saif Ali Khan) a metropolitan, genesis man who can’t comprehend the gist of love. His girlfriend Meera (Deepika Padukone) also prioritizes career over her romantic love story. Following a joint breakup, Jai and Meera go through the “enlighten of Love” moments and experience and eventually re-unite in the climax.

This is a sluggishly moving flick, flavored by some chic jibes, peppy music and full of life choreography. A big bonus is the vivacious music; “Aahun Aahun“is my all time favourite number with typical Punjabi beat and dhol dhamaka. Then “Yeh dooriyan“is sung by Mohit Chauhan‘s captivating voice and “Aaj din chaddhya“takes you down the memory lane.

However, like Socha Na Tha ( Abhay Deol + Ayesha Takia) and Jab We Met ( Shahid + Kareena), Imtiaz Ali’s 3rd movie too respites on a wafer-thin stratagem. I wonder why Imtiaz Ali’s movies revolve around “confused about love” couples. Remember, in Socha na Tha- Abhay Deol was confused whether he loves Ayesha Takia or not till the climax, while in Jab We Met, our Bebo was perplexed about her newly found love or his ex. Some mystery around that now!

The leading setback with Love Aaj Kal , according to me, is the absolutely thanda ( chilled) chemistry between Saif and Deepika. The character that Deepika was intended to render was a complete variance for her. She was deficient of the flickers and glint while depicting her character those bright catty lines. How I wish Raj Zutshi (Harleen’s father) and Neetu Kapoor were not wasted in the way they were. Rightly said, either you will like the movie completely ( like my husband did) or dislike it completely ( like me).

On a lighter side, here are few weird ( read silly )observations I made about this one. Kripya dhyan dijiyega:-

  • Period perhaps can be fine but, the typical “Havelis” in all flicks and moreover the courtyard in the house surrounded with walls, where ladies usually dance is always the same in all these flicks.
  • Bicycles appear a decade or so vernal
  • Sardarji had to run a Punjab da dhaaba or a Cafe now regardless of the fact that he had a job in a furnace earlier. Strange!
  • Peppy numbers, renowned choreographers but all of them collectively fail to make “Saif, dance saala” who appears, and acts like a world-weary rogue & generally exasperating.
  • Deepika, usually sounds like a Marathi mulgi in London & Art renovation with a few paint brushes. No doubt why Purana Killa appears to be what it is.
  • Rahul Khanna with an uninterrupted dumbfounded “wtf” expression on his face
  • Harleen – The Brazilian beauty reminded me of the infamous Sonu Walia ( remember that squint actress of Khoon Bhari Maang and Teja fame?)

Worth watching, if you have absolutely nothing on your calendar; it’s a kind of a skit endeavor on the whole, on today’s & yesteryear’s age group.

Dil ne dil mangna mangna ,Ishq mein rangna rangna

Jete ji is ne rab nu milana,Ankh lad jana

Mar muhk jana, Ekko ek kahani baas badle zamana

Aahun aahun aahun aahun aahun aahun aahun

My Name is Khan -- On America’s racial profiling vs. India’s VIP culture

A few days back, the King Khan witnessed the much talked about, detention at an American airport. He claims that that he will in no way visit America again. Last month, America’s Continental Airlines asked for forgiveness to the former Indian President- APJ Abdul Kalam in the midst of indignation in India when it appeared that the former Indian president had been cavorted and made to take off his shoes at Delhi airport.

With all these “VIPs”s getting frisked at the International Airports, my question is – What’s the Big deal? Not many might be aware that many years ago; American Senator Ted Kennedy (sibling of president John F Kennedy) was also apprehended at an airport on a domestic air travel.

SRK’s detention, which has formed something of a global episode and the most important caption story in India, originates from his last name supposedly corresponding one on one of the varied America’s Most wanteds. all such cries of prejudice from politicians and celebrities verify the veneration of VIP rank in India. SRK shouldn't have been apprehended. He's a super star after all?! Just Google his name and you will know! I concur, detention must be infuriating. It's not amusing. It's even kind of frightening. But there are a lot more frightening things than being detained a couple hours at an airport. For instance, being assaulted by brutal suicide bombers!

I feel all this mêlée won't in fact modify the racial profiling in the America, particularly when it appears like SRK is throwing a rage tinker. He asserts: "But I'm a Superstar!" the security officer replies, "Come with me." It appears like, what SRK wanted to hear was: "OMG, sir, I am terribly sorry, please pardon me. I should have recognized you. You are the star who dances even superior than the Amitabh Bacchan!" And when the security officer failed to do this, he was doomed.

So does that imply that Only film actors should be excused from racial profiling, is it?

SRK’s ill-treatment may in the long time be serve in good light for him in America, as it will undoubtedly pull notice to the US release of his upcoming movie My Name is Khan which is due for release soon sometime this year. The hullabaloo from the Indian janta will certainly grow fainter over time too, for the reason that Khan’s incarceration lasted just a couple of hours. Eventually this episode reflects on to something that happens with so many people, who travel to a foreign land. Imagine if this didn’t occur to King Khan -the Super Star, but Shahrukh Khan the general merchant, or Shahrukh Khan the IT professional. No one would ever be talking about this whole thing in the first place?

I don’t really know how SRK was humiliated by the normal procedure of securities which most of we NRIs have to go through. This story is very regular and it’s improbable the Homeland Securities broke any grave laws with what they did. I wonder if King Khan is blinking the public trump card to amplify the pre-release propaganda for My Name Is Khan.

Whatever be the reason, the bottom line that all of us should know is – No one is superior to the public security.

Live and Let Live!
