Love Aaj Kal

Romeo and Juliet, Shirin-Farhad ,Heer-Ranjha, and all those other mushy love struck tales of love – I think most of us feel that they are only found in movies or fairy tales, right? Ever experienced the “true love” yourself? (And by saying “True love” I do not imply neighborhood’s Pinky who ran away with her motorbike- boy-friend). What I mean is rethinking over the venerable question that has always intrigued most of us at some stage of life: What is love actually? Does it really subsist? More significantly, what happens when we fall in it, if we do that is? It’s about love and the “aam” junta, the mango populace? Don’t fret – I am neither sleepy not stressed out, nor am I sinking in adumbrative anguish - I am just referring to a dialogue from “Love Aaj Kal”.

Exhaustions, commitment fear, long distance relationships – problems, with which the minus 30-age group can effortlessly relate to, are finely reflected upon the movie. Love Aaj Kal, with its twin-track love-tales falls sturdily into the romantic genus. Nevertheless it’s not your lathered, vivacious romance, like our favorite “Jab we met” , but more of a story of “complex” love – that is to say, discovering “Mr. Right/Ms. Right”, and on unearthing him/her, the more arduous mission of understanding and determining if this is it. It is about Jai (Saif Ali Khan) a metropolitan, genesis man who can’t comprehend the gist of love. His girlfriend Meera (Deepika Padukone) also prioritizes career over her romantic love story. Following a joint breakup, Jai and Meera go through the “enlighten of Love” moments and experience and eventually re-unite in the climax.

This is a sluggishly moving flick, flavored by some chic jibes, peppy music and full of life choreography. A big bonus is the vivacious music; “Aahun Aahun“is my all time favourite number with typical Punjabi beat and dhol dhamaka. Then “Yeh dooriyan“is sung by Mohit Chauhan‘s captivating voice and “Aaj din chaddhya“takes you down the memory lane.

However, like Socha Na Tha ( Abhay Deol + Ayesha Takia) and Jab We Met ( Shahid + Kareena), Imtiaz Ali’s 3rd movie too respites on a wafer-thin stratagem. I wonder why Imtiaz Ali’s movies revolve around “confused about love” couples. Remember, in Socha na Tha- Abhay Deol was confused whether he loves Ayesha Takia or not till the climax, while in Jab We Met, our Bebo was perplexed about her newly found love or his ex. Some mystery around that now!

The leading setback with Love Aaj Kal , according to me, is the absolutely thanda ( chilled) chemistry between Saif and Deepika. The character that Deepika was intended to render was a complete variance for her. She was deficient of the flickers and glint while depicting her character those bright catty lines. How I wish Raj Zutshi (Harleen’s father) and Neetu Kapoor were not wasted in the way they were. Rightly said, either you will like the movie completely ( like my husband did) or dislike it completely ( like me).

On a lighter side, here are few weird ( read silly )observations I made about this one. Kripya dhyan dijiyega:-

  • Period perhaps can be fine but, the typical “Havelis” in all flicks and moreover the courtyard in the house surrounded with walls, where ladies usually dance is always the same in all these flicks.
  • Bicycles appear a decade or so vernal
  • Sardarji had to run a Punjab da dhaaba or a Cafe now regardless of the fact that he had a job in a furnace earlier. Strange!
  • Peppy numbers, renowned choreographers but all of them collectively fail to make “Saif, dance saala” who appears, and acts like a world-weary rogue & generally exasperating.
  • Deepika, usually sounds like a Marathi mulgi in London & Art renovation with a few paint brushes. No doubt why Purana Killa appears to be what it is.
  • Rahul Khanna with an uninterrupted dumbfounded “wtf” expression on his face
  • Harleen – The Brazilian beauty reminded me of the infamous Sonu Walia ( remember that squint actress of Khoon Bhari Maang and Teja fame?)

Worth watching, if you have absolutely nothing on your calendar; it’s a kind of a skit endeavor on the whole, on today’s & yesteryear’s age group.

Dil ne dil mangna mangna ,Ishq mein rangna rangna

Jete ji is ne rab nu milana,Ankh lad jana

Mar muhk jana, Ekko ek kahani baas badle zamana

Aahun aahun aahun aahun aahun aahun aahun
